This is an Adobe Flash movie. Flash "movies" are small interactive applications, or applets, that are compressed to reduce download time. They are automatically downloaded and run on the computer of the visitor as they arrive on the web page. To function properly, Flash player needs to be installed within the browser of the visitor. Adobe (and Macromedia before them) claimed Flash to be the worlds most widely distributed executable file - with a penetration rate greater than 90% (click here for details
As an interactive technology, Flash is safer than client-side scripting (i.e. running JavaScript or similar on the on the computer of the website-visitor), but less reliable than running server-side applications delivering the results into plain HTML (see the Quote Generator). This is mainly due to the number of versions of Flash installed.
In this Adobe Flash movie the visitor enters text by using the mouse - then presses Go! button. The applet uses a single square which is replicated many times to form the shapes of the chosen letters.
This is a demonstration of the principle of Work = Force x Distance. There is also an elastic function included, just to make it more interesting, otherwise, each square would return immediately to its point of rest - which would be boring!
